Builder's Standards.
Mark Hughes grew up in Killarney, started a building apprenticeship in 2004, and spent the next 15 years working his way through residential building, civil, commercial, and mining construction across the Darling Downs — from trade to site foreman on major projects. He’s managed the earthworks side of dozens of builds. And he’s cleaned up after plenty of earthmovers who didn’t do it right.

// The Story
Why Hughes Elite Earthmoving Exists.
When Mark founded Hughes Elite Builders, the same problem kept showing up on job after job. Builders and concreters arriving to sites that weren’t properly prepared. Wrong grades. Poor compaction. Drainage ignored until it became someone else’s problem. Rework before a single wall could go up — and arguments about who was responsible for it.
He’d been on both sides of it. As a builder, he’d arrived to earthworks that weren’t right. As a site foreman managing large civil and commercial projects, he’d watched earthmoving contractors hand over sites that looked finished but weren’t. The problem wasn’t the equipment. It was the absence of a builder’s understanding of what the site actually needed to be.
I've been the builder arriving at a site that wasn't prepared properly. I've seen what poor earthworks cost a build — in money, in time, and in goodwill between the trades. That's the problem Hughes Elite Earthmoving is here to fix. Every job gets a builder's eye, not just a machine operator's. The site is prepared the way it needs to be, not the way that's quickest to hand over.

Mark's Path to the Earthmoving
Building Apprenticeship
Grew up in Killarney. Started a building apprenticeship and learned construction from the ground up — trades, materials, and how a building site actually works. The foundation that every subsequent role was built on.
Residenial, Civil, Commercial & Mining Construction
Over a decade working across residential, civil, commercial, and mining projects across the Darling Downs — progressing from trade work to site foreman on major projects. Managed earthworks coordination, trade sequencing, and subcontractor oversight across multiple large-scale builds.
Hughes Elite Builders Founded
Established Hughes Elite Builders in Warwick. Holding a Queensland Builder's Licence, Mark began managing residential and commercial builds across the Southern Downs — and continued encountering the same problem with earthworks preparation that would eventually lead to the next step.
Hughes Elite Earthmoving
Owner-Operated Earthmoving Contractor — Warwick QLD
The earthmoving business exists to solve the problem Mark saw repeatedly across 15+ years of construction. Sites prepared to construction standard — by someone who genuinely understands what that means — for residential, rural, and light commercial projects across the Southern Downs and Darling Downs.
In Practical Terms
Every trade has a lens they apply to their work. A builder's lens is: what does this site need to be so the next person can do their job properly?
Slab Bases That Don't Need Levelling Compound
Laser-levelled to the tolerances your concreter actually needs. Not "close enough for earthworks", close enough for the pour.
Drainage That Works After the First Rain
Falls are designed into the formation from the start, not corrected after water pools somewhere it shouldn't.
Site Ready When Your Builder Arrives
We know what "builder-ready" actually means because we've been the builder arriving at the site. We prepare it accordingly.
Left Clean, Not Left for Someone Else
The site is cleaned up before we leave. The next trade walks onto something they can work on, not around.
Straight Answers Upfront
You'll be told honestly what the job needs, what it'll cost, and if there's something we're not the right fit for. No quote that sounds good and delivers less.
Sequenced Around the Build
We understand construction sequencing. We work around your pour date, your builder's timeline, and your trade schedule, not our convenience.
Who's on the Tools

Mark manages every job personally — quoting, operating, and being the single point of contact from first call to handover. If you call Hughes Elite Earthmoving, you're talking to Mark. If we're on your site, Mark is on your site.

Damo is the other set of hands on the tools — an experienced concreter and machinery operator who handles excavator and plant operation across residential and rural jobs. Between Mark and Damo, we run multiple machines and handle larger scope without bringing in unknown subcontractors.
// Local Knowledge
We Know the Country We Work In.
Every region in the Southern Downs has its own soil conditions, drainage patterns, and seasonal challenges. Mark grew up here. He’s worked these soils throughout his career. That knowledge isn’t a selling point — it’s just what 15 years of working in this region looks like.
We don’t approach a Warwick black soil block the same way we’d approach Stanthorpe granite. We don’t plan a Killarney access track without accounting for the slopes. We don’t quote a Darling Downs job without knowing what the seasonal window looks like.
Warwick & Allora Black Soil Plains
Highly reactive — swells wet, cracks dry, heaves gravel off unbuilt driveways. Base preparation and drainage design account for movement before it happens.
Killarney & Main Range Slopes
Volcanic basalt slopes with excellent drainage but steep grades that need careful formation planning. Access tracks here need proper camber or they wash out within a season.
Stanthorpe Granite Belt
Shallow granite soils with rock not far below the surface. Excavation depths need to be scoped carefully. Drainage on granite is generally excellent — water moves fast, which creates its own issues.
Northern Corridor — Allora to Clifton
Black soil country transitioning to lighter mixed soils. Good agricultural land that needs careful earthworks to preserve productive topsoil and field drainage.
How Every Job Gets Handled.
We Show Up
We turn up when we say we will. If something changes, we call. Reliability isn't a selling point — but in this industry, it still needs to be said.
We Finish
Jobs don't get half-done and left while we move to something else. The job is complete before we leave — and the site is clean when we do.
We're Straight
You'll get an honest answer about what the job needs, what it'll cost, and if we're not the right fit. No padding the quote, no scope creep, no surprises.
We Build It Right
Every site is prepared to construction standard — not earthmoving standard. The difference is a builder's lens on what "ready" actually means.
